Funerals

'With a view of the splendid recompense reserved for those who make a pious end, the thought was holy and devout. This was why Judas Maccabbees had an atonement sacrifice offered for the dead, so that they might be released from their sin.'

2 Maccabbees 12:45

The death of a loved one is always a traumatic time for all those involved. The Church wants to be able support all involved as well as offering the Pastoral Care and Funeral Rites of the Church for the person who is dying or who has died.

Ideally the Parish Priest would know of the imminent death of someone who is suffering a terminal illness and be able to offer support during this phase of life. Sometimes though death happens suddenly and tragically. Whatever the situation, either the deceased’s family or Funeral Director, contact the Parish Priest and advise him of the death.

The priest will visit you to discuss ways that the parish can support and help at this time including plans for the funeral. Please do not set dates and times for the funeral director without first talking to the Priest, to ensure availability of the church facilities etc.

The Church is always happy to celebrate a Requiem Mass for a deceased Catholic, though sometimes a Funeral Service in the Church may be a more appropriate option.

The Parish have available a set of guidelines for arranging a Requiem Mass or Funeral Service and resources, 'Time to Say Goodbye' to assist in the choice of readings and hymns as appropriate.

For assistance in preparing for a funeral contact the local Parish. Guidance is also available at catholicfunerals.co.nz
